You Sow Reap what You Reap Sow

I try not to read the Post-Dispatch in the morning because it so often provokes a "WtF?????" reaction. Actually, I usually fly into a raving diatribe that would send a listening psychiatrist running for a straitjacket and antipsychotics. The Husband responds simply: Easy, easy.

Today is no different. Here's an actual quote from a front page story in the Business section about Mall Loyalty Programs at Chesterfield and West County Malls that started May 1:
"I don't mess around," said Allen, who already has met the minimum $1,000 requirement. "I was a woman possessed.

(snip one paragraph)

"I like the idea I'm being rewarded for being a patriotic citizen and keeping the economy going," Allen said. "It doesn't have to be much, just to know we're being appreciated. [bold mine]
I'm all for good PR in a tight market--malls that start loyalty programs differentiate themselves from others, especially important since they mostly have the same retail mix. And I have no problem with people choosing to spend their money frivolously, so long as I don't end up paying for it. But characterizing that choice as patriotic is an insult to anyone who ever served in the Armed Forces, and especially to those risking their lives now.

Three real ways Ms. Allen could exhibit her patriotism:
  1. Sign her kids up for the military.
  2. Use half of that $1000 to help a family with a parent serving in the Middle East.
  3. Drive to the mall less frequently so we don't have to go to war over cheap oil.
If the majority of the people in this country think like Ms. Allen, we're getting what we deserve. Someone please tell me she's kidding and the reporter just didn't get it.

*about the title edit: I'm prone to premature button pushing.

More stuff! We need to buy more stuff! Especially more stuff from China!

You hope she's an anomaly. You hope she's kidding around. I don't think she is. At all.

I was hoping that the brainwashing that W received was not an epidemic running rampant through the entire populace.

How sad. Is it any wonder people are in so much debt and can't afford their houses after sapping all their equity out of it?

Still they spend. Still they drive 30 miles each way to work in thine SUV. Sort of like the fact that Hillary Clinton doesn't care what the elitists say about economics. Ignore reality, if you spend it more will come... right?

Hil and McCain both, Curtis, be fair.

So she thinks that the duty of a citizen in the consumer society she has always lived in is to consume: just what the military industrial complex has always thought about their products.
